The Nigerian Navy has intensified its crackdown on crude oil theft in Rivers State after operatives uncovered fresh attempts by suspected oil thieves to establish illegal refining camps in parts of the state.
The operation, carried out under Operation Delta Sentinel, also led to the recovery of large quantities of suspected illegally refined petroleum products hidden within the creeks.
According to naval authorities, the discoveries were made during a targeted operation around the Promise Land axis of Bonny Local Government Area following intelligence reports on suspicious activities linked to economic sabotage.
Naval operatives attached to the Forward Operating Base, Bonny, reportedly launched coordinated patrols across nearby waterways and creeks while aerial surveillance teams monitored movements within the area.
During the operation, security personnel uncovered hidden refining equipment concealed beneath dense vegetation, raising concerns over renewed illegal refining activities in the region.
Further investigations at the scene revealed two newly established illegal refining camps situated close to the river channel, allegedly designed to ease the movement and distribution of refined products.
Officials said the camps contained locally fabricated cooking pots, connected pipe systems and several makeshift installations believed to have been prepared for large-scale illegal petroleum processing.
The Navy described the operation as part of sustained efforts to combat crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism and other forms of economic sabotage affecting the nation’s oil sector.
Authorities also reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining pressure on criminal networks operating within the Niger Delta waterways and surrounding communities.
