Ill Delta Resident Dies in Police Custody After Arrest by Officers, Sparks Outrage

A human rights activist, Israel Joe, has alleged that a sick detainee has died while in police custody at Ekpan Police Station in Delta State.
The activist claimed the deceased was among several individuals arrested during an operation reportedly led by the Delta State police operations unit.
According to Joe, the victim was already ill while in detention and was seen being rushed out of the cell before reports later confirmed his death.
He said the arrest was carried out by officers under the command of Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations in the state.
Joe described the incident as unjust and called for accountability from the police authorities, insisting that such actions must not go unpunished.
He also criticised the silence of the state government, warning that protests could be organised if urgent action is not taken.
The activist further demanded disciplinary measures against officers involved in the arrest, describing their conduct as unacceptable.
As of the time of filing this report, the Delta State Police Command had not released any official statement confirming the alleged death or responding to the accusations.
Details surrounding the arrest, the detainee’s health condition before detention, and the exact cause of death remain unclear.
Human rights advocates have called for an independent investigation to determine what happened inside the Ekpan police facility.
Efforts to get a response from the police authorities were unsuccessful at the time of publication.
The case has added to ongoing concerns over alleged misconduct and accountability within the Nigeria Police Force.
