Senate Approves Justice Joseph Oyewole Kayode for Supreme Court Appointment

The Nigerian Senate has approved the appointment of Hon. Justice Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

His confirmation follows a nomination by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which was sent to the Senate in late January 2026 under Section 231(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Justice Oyewole’s nomination came after the National Judicial Council (NJC), led by Chief Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, recommended him and other judicial appointments during its 110th meeting on January 13, 2026.

Before the confirmation, Justice Oyewole, who was previously the Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal, Enugu Division, underwent a screening by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters.

Lawmakers praised his extensive experience and qualifications, noting his detailed 31-page curriculum vitae, which was shared with senators ahead of the screening.

The confirmation aligns with ongoing judicial reforms proposed by President Tinubu, aimed at increasing the number of justices in the Court of Appeal and judges in the Federal High Court to reduce case backlogs.

Justice Oyewole’s elevation to the Supreme Court is expected to strengthen the judiciary and support the smooth administration of justice across the country.

The Senate’s approval was widely welcomed by legal practitioners and stakeholders, who described the move as a positive step for Nigeria’s judicial system.

His appointment marks a significant milestone in his career and reflects his long-standing service in the Nigerian judiciary.

The new Supreme Court Justice is now officially empowered to sit on the nation’s highest court, joining his colleagues in shaping legal precedents and interpreting the Constitution.
