Update: EFCC Arrests Vote Buyers in Anambra

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested several individuals across polling units in Anambra State for allegedly engaging in vote buying during the ongoing governorship election. The arrests took place on Saturday after intelligence reports revealed attempts by some persons to influence voters with cash and other inducements.
EFCC operatives deployed across the state acted on these reports, apprehending suspects who were either offering money to voters or collecting cash in exchange for their votes. The operation covered multiple locations, with officers maintaining surveillance to ensure transparency in the electoral process.
Officials of the EFCC, who spoke to journalists in Awka, confirmed that those arrested are in custody and will be prosecuted once the election is concluded. They reiterated that the Commission remains committed to promoting fair and credible elections by tackling financial crimes and voter corruption.
“The EFCC will not tolerate any form of vote buying or selling,” one official stated. “Our operatives are on the ground to ensure that the integrity of the process is protected, and offenders will face the full weight of the law.”
An Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) official in Awka also emphasized that vote trading is a serious electoral offence under the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended). She noted that Sections 121 and 127 provide penalties of up to ₦500,000 in fines or 12 months in prison—or both—for anyone found guilty of offering or receiving inducements to influence votes.
INEC further warned that vote buying undermines the credibility of elections and the right of citizens to freely choose their leaders. The Commission assured that it will continue to collaborate with law enforcement agencies, including the EFCC, to ensure all offenders are held accountable.
