Shettima Inspects Scene of Fire Disaster at Kano Market

Shettima Visits Fire-Ravaged Singer Market, FG Pledges Support to Victims
Vice President Kashim Shettima inspected Singer Market in Kano State, where a weekend inferno destroyed goods and property estimated at over ₦5 billion.
The fire broke out on Saturday evening, February 14, 2026, in the Gidan Glass section of the market along Ado Bayero Road and continued into Sunday morning. More than 1,000 shops were affected, with seven traders reportedly feared missing.
Shettima, accompanied by a high-powered federal delegation, walked through the devastated market to assess the damage and interact with victims. Large crowds of traders and residents gathered at the scene as he expressed sympathy and solidarity.
The visit followed a directive from President Bola Tinubu, who mandated the Vice President to lead a Federal Government delegation to Kano and convey the government’s condolences. The delegation is also expected to pledge financial assistance to support affected traders and facilitate the swift reopening of the market.
Emergency responders, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Kano State Emergency Management Agency, and the Federal Fire Service, eventually contained the blaze. Officials linked the incident to a possible solar battery explosion.
The incident marks the second major fire outbreak at the market in less than two weeks. President Tinubu has ordered a full investigation into the recurring market fires, while the Federal Government’s on-the-ground assessment is expected to guide immediate relief efforts and longer-term support for the victims.
