Senegal Protest March After Fans Jailed in Morocco

Hundreds of people marched through Dakar, Senegal, on Saturday to demand the release of 18 Senegalese fans jailed in Morocco after the Africa Cup of Nations final in January.
The supporters carried flags and placards and chanted slogans like “Free the hostages” as they walked through the city.
The 18 fans were sentenced by a court in Rabat on February 19 to prison terms between three months and one year for hooliganism linked to clashes during the match.
The protests took place after a controversial penalty late in the game, which Morocco was awarded before Senegal won 1-0 in extra time.
Senegal’s prime minister has criticised the jail sentences, saying the incident should not harm relations between the two countries.
Protesters urged authorities to do more to secure the release of their compatriots.
Supporters also voiced frustration at how the situation has affected fans who travelled to support their team.
The march in Dakar was peaceful and drew significant public attention.
Senegalese citizens say the detentions overshadow the team’s victory at the tournament.
The issue continues to spark debate and calls for diplomatic action between Senegal and Morocco.
