Power Crisis Sparks Protest Across Lagos Communities

By Ranti Thomas
Frustration over continued electricity blackouts in Lagos boiled over on Thursday as residents took to the streets to protest the poor power supply across the state.
The protest took place in the Fadeyi area, where a group of mainly young Nigerians marched through the streets demanding better electricity services.
A video circulating online showed the protesters chanting and carrying placards as they expressed anger over what they described as the collapse of the power sector.
Many of the demonstrators said the unreliable electricity supply was damaging businesses and making daily life more difficult.
Some protesters carried placards with messages calling for an end to estimated billing by electricity distribution companies.
Other placards criticised the continued “epileptic” power supply experienced by many communities across Lagos.
One of the messages read, “No light, no life, no nation,” highlighting the frustration felt by many residents.
Another placard read, “You’re destroying and killing so many businesses; give us regular light.”
During the protest, one demonstrator was heard shouting that residents were not demanding too much from the authorities.
According to him, all citizens want is a stable electricity supply that allows businesses and households to function normally.
Many small business owners say they have been forced to rely heavily on generators due to the unstable power supply.
This has significantly increased operating costs for traders and shop owners across the city.
Residents also complained that despite paying electricity bills, they continue to experience long hours without power.
The protest in Lagos is part of a growing wave of complaints across Nigeria over the country’s persistent electricity challenges.
