Nigeria, UK Advance Talks on Security Alliance

President Bola Tinubu has said that Nigeria’s collaboration with the United Kingdom remains critical in tackling insecurity, as he prepares to meet British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The President stated that discussions with Starmer would focus on Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts and challenges affecting regional stability in West Africa.
Tinubu made the remarks during a state banquet hosted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle, marking the first time a Nigerian leader has addressed a gathering at the historic British royal residence.
The dinner, which began at 9:00 pm local time, was part of activities lined up for Tinubu’s ongoing state visit to the UK.
On security cooperation, the President highlighted Nigeria’s role in confronting terrorism in the Sahel and emphasised that partnership with the United Kingdom is essential to safeguard regional stability.
He also recalled his years in exile during the military regime of General Sani Abacha, noting that the UK provided him refuge and protection during the dark period of military dictatorship.
Tinubu thanked the United Kingdom for its support during those years, describing it as deeply humbling and etched in Nigeria’s collective memory.
He highlighted the long-standing ties between both nations, pointing to the influence of British legal traditions and parliamentary practices on Nigerian institutions.
The President also recognised the contributions of Nigerians in the UK, particularly in the National Health Service and in sports, as examples of the strong human connection between the two countries.
Tinubu described Nigeria as a nation of young, vibrant people and expressed optimism about the country’s future, proposing a toast to the enduring bond between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
The visit, running from March 18 to 19, is the first by a Nigerian President to the UK in 37 years and is expected to result in agreements covering trade, investment, defence, and cultural cooperation, including a £746 million deal for the refurbishment of Lagos Port Complex and Tin Can Island Port.
