The Nigeria Football Federation has praised Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong after he announced that he is stepping away from international football. His exit marks the end of a remarkable journey that spanned ten years and left a strong mark on Nigeria’s national team.
In a statement released on Friday, the federation described Troost-Ekong as a dedicated and humble leader who always put the country first. They said he played with discipline, pride and a deep sense of responsibility throughout his time with the Super Eagles.
According to the NFF, his retirement came after a careful review of his decade of service, one they believe deserves honour and appreciation. The body noted that Troost-Ekong remained consistent from his debut in 2015 until his final international bow.
The federation said the defender stood out long before he became captain, showing ambition, strong character and total commitment anytime he wore the national colours.
They praised his contributions in major tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations in 2019, 2021 and 2023, describing those performances as guides for younger players coming into the team.
Troost-Ekong played a key role in Nigeria’s AFCON campaigns, winning both silver and bronze medals for the country. He also featured at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, where he delivered some important displays on the global stage.
The NFF highlighted that with 83 caps across several competitions, Troost-Ekong leaves behind a career filled with pride and major achievements.
His standout performance at the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire received special mention. He scored three important goals and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, a moment that sealed his status as one of Nigeria’s most respected defenders.
As the curtain falls on his international career, the federation wished him success in the future. They added that they remain ready to support him in any role he may take on within the game.
The NFF concluded its message by thanking Troost-Ekong for his service and leadership, saying his legacy will continue to inspire both current and future Super Eagles players.
