NCC Mandates Telcos to Reward Users for Service Failures

The Nigerian Communications Commission has directed telecom operators to compensate customers affected by poor network performance across the country.
The regulator announced that subscribers who experience service disruptions will receive compensation in the form of airtime credits. These credits will be calculated based on users’ average spending and the areas where network issues occur.
According to the commission, the move is designed to ensure that customers are not left to bear the consequences when telecom providers fail to meet required service standards.
Officials explained that the directive is part of broader efforts to prioritise consumer protection and improve accountability within the telecommunications sector. They noted that reliable network services are essential for business activities, communication, and access to digital opportunities.
The commission also instructed infrastructure companies, including tower operators, to reinvest fines imposed on them into improving network quality and expanding capacity.
Authorities stressed that telecom firms must continue investing in stronger infrastructure to meet growing demand and reduce service disruptions nationwide.
The directive signals a stricter regulatory approach, with the commission pledging to enforce fairness, transparency, and better service delivery for telecom users.
