Manchester United Sack Ruben Amorim After Controversy

Manchester United have parted ways with head coach Ruben Amorim, the club announced on January 5, 2026.
Amorim, who joined the Red Devils in November 2024, was dismissed amid concerns over poor team performances and recent remarks that highlighted tensions within the club.
The decision came just hours after Amorim publicly criticised Manchester United’s leadership following a 1–1 draw with Leeds United. At the time, the club was sitting sixth in the Premier League table. Sources say the controversial interview accelerated the club’s move to relieve him of his duties.
In a statement, Manchester United said, “Ruben Amorim has left his role as Head Coach of Manchester United.
“Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and guided the team to the UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.
“With the team currently sixth in the Premier League, the club believes this is the right moment to make a change to give the squad the best chance of a strong finish this season.
“The club thanks Ruben for his contributions and wishes him all the best for the future.
“Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.”
Manchester United will appoint an interim manager as they begin the process of finding a permanent replacement.
