Not fewer than 13 male suspects have been arrested by the Enugu State Police Command following an ambush attack on police officers in Akpakume community, Udi Local Government Area of Enugu state.
The suspects were arrested during a swift operation launched after the officers were attacked while trying to apprehend individuals linked to cases of conspiracy, unlawful possession of firearms, and cult-related activities.
“Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command, in the early hours of November 3, 2025, arrested thirteen male suspects and recovered one locally made single-barrelled gun at Akpakume community, Udi Local Government Area,” the statement read.
According to the Command, the suspects and their accomplices had laid an ambush and opened fire on the police team, leaving some officers injured and damaging their patrol vehicle.
“The operatives, however, swiftly responded with superior firepower, forcing many of the criminal elements to flee with varying degrees of severe gunshot injuries,” the statement added.
The police noted that the attackers’ gunfire also shattered the headlights of the patrol vehicle and damaged several nearby vehicles during the confrontation.
Meanwhile, Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Giwa, on Tuesday led a team of senior officers to Akpakume community for an on-the-spot assessment of the damage caused by the hoodlums.
During the visit, it was discovered that the attackers had willfully destroyed houses, shops, and properties, including crops and livestock belonging to residents of the community.
“Preliminary investigation has revealed that the attack is linked to an ongoing intra-communal crisis in the area,” the statement continued.
The Commissioner has ordered a manhunt for the fleeing suspects and assured residents that all those involved will be brought to justice. He urged law-abiding citizens to remain calm and continue their normal activities, reaffirming the Command’s commitment to maintaining peace and security across Enugu State.
