INEC Chair Says 2027 Elections May Not Be Flawless

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan, has said the 2027 general elections may not be “100 per cent perfect.”
He, however, assured Nigerians that INEC has the capacity to electronically transmit election results.
Amupitan urged citizens to lower their expectations of perfection, stressing that the commission would do its best to deliver a credible poll.
He spoke during a live town hall programme focused on the Electoral Act 2026 and preparations for the 2027 elections.
The INEC boss explained that electronic transmission is not the main problem, but real-time transmission in remote areas remains a challenge.
He cited a recent area council election in the Federal Capital Territory where results from a hard-to-reach ward were delayed because of poor network and difficult terrain.
According to him, logistics play a major role in the success of elections, warning that any failure in logistics can affect public confidence.
Despite admitting that there were minor human and operational errors in recent elections, he said the commission is working to fix them ahead of 2027.
Amupitan also disclosed that INEC has begun reviewing its regulations to align with the Electoral Act 2026 and strengthen political party oversight.
He expressed optimism that the 2027 elections would be better than previous ones, adding that increased voter awareness and stronger reforms would improve transparency and trust in the system.
