Disu Sets Up Committee on State Police

The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has inaugurated an eight-member committee to oversee the implementation of state police and drive his policing vision following his confirmation as the 23rd indigenous IGP.
The development comes days after the Nigeria Police Council unanimously ratified his appointment, paving the way for his swearing-in by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.
Professor Olu Ogunsakin was named chairman of the state police implementation committee.
Speaking during his first formal engagement with senior officers since his confirmation, Disu said leadership is about responsibility, not position, stressing that professionalism and accountability must guide police operations nationwide.
He emphasised that authority must be exercised with restraint and that respect for human rights remains fundamental, noting that every Nigerian deserves dignity, fairness and justice regardless of status.
The IGP also announced plans to strengthen internal oversight within the force, directing that the Public Complaint Unit and the X-Squad be empowered to operate independently.
On decentralisation, Disu said state policing would allow different tiers of government to play more active roles in addressing security challenges.
President Tinubu had appointed Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police on February 24, 2026, following the resignation of his predecessor, Kayode Egbetokun. His appointment was later endorsed by the Police Council.
Disu is expected to be formally sworn in as substantive IGP during a meeting of the Federal Executive Council.
His appointment comes amid growing concerns over security challenges across the country, including kidnappings, banditry and attacks on communities.
The state police initiative is part of broader security reforms aimed at decentralising policing powers to improve responsiveness and effectiveness at the local level.
