Cyberstalking Case: Court Releases Angela Okorie on ₦5m Bail

A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted Nollywood actress Angela Okorie bail in the sum of ₦5 million over charges of alleged cyberstalking, threats and harassment.
Okorie is facing a seven-count charge under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, following allegations that she sent offensive and threatening messages through her social media platforms.
The actress was earlier arrested in Lagos by operatives of the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department and later remanded at the Suleja Correctional Centre in Niger State after her arraignment.
At the resumed hearing, prosecuting counsel Victor Okoye informed the court that an amended charge dated January 30, 2026, had been filed and served on the defendant. Defence counsel Ernest Nwoye confirmed receipt, after which Okorie pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
According to the prosecution, the actress allegedly posted offensive and threatening messages between 2024 and 2025, targeting fellow Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson. The messages were said to be capable of causing a breach of public peace and threatening the complainant’s safety.
While moving the bail application, Nwoye told the court that Okorie is a responsible citizen with a known address and would not evade trial. He added that she had previously informed the police of her absence due to medical treatment and provided evidence of a gunshot injury.
Opposing the application, the prosecution argued that Okorie had earlier failed to honour administrative bail conditions and was also being investigated for other offences that could attract jail terms.
In his ruling, Justice Emeka Nwite held that there was no concrete evidence showing that the actress would jump bail. He therefore granted her bail in the sum of ₦5 million, with one surety in the same amount.
The judge ordered that the surety must be a Grade Level 13 civil servant, who must submit an affidavit of means, along with appointment and last promotion letters. Okorie was ordered to remain in custody until all bail conditions are met.
The case was adjourned to March 23, 2026, for continuation of trial.
