Ebola Case: FAAN Intensifies Airport Monitoring, Calls for Public Cooperation
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has strengthened health surveillance across the country’s airports following the confirmation of an imported Ebola virus disease case in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
The authority said it was working with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), Port Health Services, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and other relevant agencies to support efforts to contain the infection and prevent further transmission.
FAAN explained that early detection, effective monitoring and cooperation among public health and aviation agencies remained critical to managing potential health emergencies, particularly those involving international travel.
The authority’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, disclosed the measures in a statement issued on Tuesday, noting that surveillance operations across airport facilities had been heightened in response to the development.
FAAN said it would continue to work with health authorities to implement additional precautions and follow relevant public health guidance as necessary to protect passengers, airport workers and other members of the public.
The agency also urged travellers, airlines, airport users and other stakeholders to remain calm and cooperate with health officials carrying out their duties.
It cautioned the public against circulating unverified reports about the outbreak, stressing the importance of relying on credible information from authorised health agencies.
The development follows the Federal Government’s confirmation of an imported Ebola case involving a woman who recently travelled to Nigeria from Uganda. Health authorities have commenced contact tracing, with 44 contacts identified for monitoring as part of efforts to limit the risk of further transmission.
FAAN reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the national response and maintaining safe airport operations while health agencies continue their containment efforts.
