Madonna University Sanctions 15 Nursing Students
Madonna University, Elele Campus, Rivers State, has taken disciplinary action against 15 nursing students following the circulation of a viral TikTok video showing them dancing in areas connected to the university’s hospital.
One final-year nursing student, identified simply as Mercy, was expelled, while 14 other 500-level students involved in the video were suspended.
The video, which was linked to a social media trend involving “Gen Z nurses,” showed students dancing in a hospital waiting area, a staircase and a bus. It was accompanied by a caption suggesting that “Gen Z” workers had taken over hospitals.
The footage was reportedly recorded on the university premises and uploaded in August before gaining wider attention online. A shortened version later attracted more than 1.7 million views on X, bringing the conduct of the students under intense public scrutiny.
The disciplinary action has sparked a wider debate about the limits of social media content among students undergoing professional healthcare training, particularly when such content is produced within a clinical environment.
While the conduct has been criticised as inappropriate for nursing students, the National Association of Nigerian Students has appealed to the university to reconsider the severity of the punishment.
NANS President Akinteye Babatunde Afeez acknowledged that the students’ conduct was unacceptable and inconsistent with the discipline expected of nursing students. However, he argued that expulsion could have lasting consequences for the affected student’s education and future career.
The association urged the university to replace the expulsion with a stern warning or another corrective measure, arguing that the students should be allowed to learn from the incident without having their professional ambitions permanently derailed.
The controversy has also highlighted the growing challenge facing universities as students increasingly combine academic life with social media content creation. For institutions training future healthcare professionals, the incident raises questions about how schools can balance discipline, professional ethics and opportunities for students to learn from mistakes.
Madonna University is expected to issue a fuller official response to the development, while the appeal for clemency has placed the students’ academic futures at the centre of the growing debate.
