Olu Jacobs Dies At 84, Leaving Behind A Lasting Acting Legacy

Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84. His death was announced by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.

The family announced that the actor died on September 16, 2026, after a life and career that spanned theatre, television and film. In the family statement, he was described as “The Lion of Lufodo,” while relatives appealed to bloggers and social media influencers to respect their privacy as they mourn.

Born on July 11, 1942, Jacobs grew into one of Nigeria’s most recognised actors, building a career that began in Britain before he returned to Nigeria and became a major figure in the country’s growing film industry.

His early professional career included training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He subsequently appeared in several British television productions and international films before establishing himself as one of the leading faces of Nigerian theatre, television and cinema.

Jacobs became particularly respected for his commanding screen presence and ability to portray a wide range of characters. His career stretched across different generations of Nigerian entertainment, allowing him to remain relevant as the industry moved from traditional theatre and television into the modern Nollywood era.

Beyond acting, he was also involved in film production and the development of the performing arts. He and his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, were closely associated with the Lufodo Group and contributed to the growth of professional theatre and film in Nigeria.
