UNIZIK Lecturers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid August Salary

Lecturers at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, have commenced an indefinite strike over the failure of the university management to pay their full August 2026 salaries.

The industrial action was declared by the university’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities on Monday after members expressed frustration over the incomplete payment.

The union said the decision followed a congress meeting where members resolved to withdraw their academic and administrative services until the outstanding salaries are fully paid.

ASUU-UNIZIK said the incomplete payment has happened more than once, describing the situation as frustrating for its members.

The lecturers said their decision was based specifically on the non-payment of the complete August salary and urged the university authorities to urgently resolve the matter.

The union also called on the university’s Visitor, President Bola Tinubu, to intervene and ensure that the outstanding salaries are paid.

ASUU directed all its members to immediately stop providing academic and administrative services as the indefinite action takes effect.

The union said the withdrawal of services would continue until all members receive their complete August salaries.

The development could affect academic activities at the university as lecturers remain away from their official duties.

The lecturers also appealed to the university authorities to put measures in place to prevent a recurrence of the salary payment problem.
