Popular Comedian Aiza Nwosu Killed In Gun Attack In Awka, One Other Dead

Popular Anambra comedian and media personality, Aiza Nwosu, has been killed in a shooting attack in Awka, the state capital, with another man also losing his life in a separate but related attack.

The incident occurred on Sunday, August 30, 2026, leaving residents in parts of Awka frightened as the attackers reportedly moved between locations during the operation.

Nwosu, who was also known as a master of ceremonies, disc jockey, media personality and digital town crier, was attacked along S.M. Okeke Street in the Amaikwo area of Awka.

The second victim was reportedly attacked along Capital City Road, Amaenyi, where he was allegedly dispossessed of his belongings before the assailants escaped from the area.

Eyewitnesses said Nwosu was reportedly followed from his residence by about three men travelling in a silver-coloured Toyota Corolla. The suspects were said to have overtaken and blocked his vehicle before opening fire.

The comedian was reportedly left inside his vehicle after the shooting, while the attackers moved away from the area and allegedly targeted the second victim.

The gunmen were also said to have fired shots into the air as they escaped, sending residents and passers-by into panic.

The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the killings on Monday, August 31, 2026, saying its operatives had begun efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the attacks and identify those responsible.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said preliminary findings indicated that three unidentified men using a silver Toyota Corolla were responsible for the attacks at the two locations.

Following the incident, police operatives recovered the bodies of the victims and moved them to a hospital, where they were confirmed dead.

Items recovered by the police included ₦7,550, a Moniepoint ATM card and a pair of slippers. The registration number of the vehicle allegedly used by the attackers was not immediately available.

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Ama, condemned the killings and ordered the case to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Awka, for a detailed investigation.

The police chief also directed security personnel to strengthen patrols, surveillance and intelligence operations around Awka and neighbouring communities in an effort to track down the suspects.

Nwosu’s death has generated concern among people familiar with his work in Awka, where he had become a recognisable personality through his comedy, event appearances, media activities and public engagements.

Although different accounts may point to possible motives behind the shooting, the police have not officially established why Nwosu and the second victim were targeted.

Authorities are therefore treating the matter as an active investigation and are expected to rely on eyewitness accounts, intelligence gathering and evidence recovered from the crime scenes to identify the perpetrators.

The police have appealed to residents and anyone who may have witnessed the attacks or noticed the movement of the silver Toyota Corolla to provide useful information to investigators.

The command assured residents that credible information would be handled confidentially as efforts continue to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killing of Aiza Nwosu and the other victim.
