Swiss Rave Turns Deadly as Woman, 22, Is Killed and Five Others Injured

A night of music and celebration in the Swiss town of Aarau ended in tragedy after gunfire broke out at a rave party early Sunday, killing a 22-year-old woman and leaving five others injured.

The shooting happened at about 2:30am, shortly after the music at the event had stopped. Police said the five injured victims were also in their 20s, with some suffering serious injuries. All six victims are Swiss residents.

The event was being held at a covered horse-racing track in Aarau, around 50 kilometres west of Zurich. Organisers had expected about 3,500 people to attend the techno party.

Witnesses described scenes of confusion and panic after the first shots were heard. One 34-year-old attendee told Reuters that he initially thought the sound was fireworks because the shooting happened shortly after the music stopped.

As people realised what was happening, some rushed to find cover. One witness said some attendees hid behind the DJ booth, while another woman took shelter behind a refrigerator but was struck by a bullet and later died despite attempts to save her.

The five injured people were taken for medical treatment, with some reported to be in serious condition. Authorities have not released further details about their identities.

Police quickly sealed off large parts of Aarau and launched a major operation to find the person or people responsible for the shooting. Officers have also increased their presence outside the town as a precaution.

The Aargau Cantonal Police have appealed to members of the public who attended the event or were in the area to provide photographs and videos that could help investigators establish what happened.

Authorities have not yet established the motive for the attack, and no suspect has been publicly identified or arrested as the investigation continues.

An army helicopter was also reported to be assisting the operation, while armed police officers and other security personnel were deployed around the affected area.

The shooting has shocked residents of Aarau, particularly because serious gun violence is relatively uncommon in Switzerland despite the country’s high level of civilian gun ownership. Switzerland introduced tighter gun-control measures in 2019.

For those who attended the rave, what began as a night of entertainment ended with a young woman dead and several others wounded. Police are now working to establish how the attacker gained access to the area, identify the person responsible and determine the reason behind the shooting.
