Erstwhile frontline presidential contender and running mate to Atiku Abubaker in the 2015 presidential polls, Mr Peter Obi, is now seeking the candidacy of the Labour Party (LP) to enter the contest in the 2023 presidential polls.
The soft spoken orator who dazzled the global audience in the 2015 presidential debate formally registered for the membership of Labour Party in Anambra State on Friday.
At his ward in Anambra State, Mr Peter Obi declared that he would recover Nigeria from the current precipice and reunite its divided citizens. He expressed gratitude to his large youthful followers, poiting out that the future of the country belongs to them.
“This project is yours and for the future of your children. Be assured that I’ll never let you down. I am just a facilitator. I invite all Nigerians to join me in taking back our country,” he said.
He explained that he left the PDP “because of issues that are at variance with my persona and principles,” adding that “I have consulted widely with various parties and personalities to ensure we do not complicate the route to our desired destination.”
“For me, the process of achieving our goal is as fundamental as what one will do thereafter.
“Therefore, I have chosen a route that I consider to be in line with our aspirations and my mantra of taking the country from consumption to production; and that is the Labour Party which is synonymous with the people, workers, development, production, securing and uniting Nigerians as one family.
Mr Obi who resigned his membership and withdrew his presidential aspiration from the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had created huge curiosity in the political space over his next line of action.
The former Anambra State Governor who also served as Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) enjoys high rating among the aspirants in the 2023 presidential polls. He was rated the best preferred aspirant in a credible poll conducted by BusinessDay newspaper.
The Oracle Today reports that Mr Peter Obi will contest for the LP’s presidential ticket by Tuesday to determine his hopes to become the next Nigerian president by 2023.
