A man identified as Sule Sakon Kano, was set ablaze on Friday, 18 August, 2023 in Lapai town, Lapai LGA, Niger State for allegedly stealing two girls, aged four and five respectively.
It was gathered that town has been under siege, witnessing the disappearances of young children of late; hence, some people in the town vent their anger Kano when he was caught with two girls.
It was also gathered that the two girls were sent by their parents to a nearby shop to buy some items around 1:30 pm, at the time when people were observing the Friday prayers in Lapai.
A source from the area disclosed that before his death, the suspect reportedly admitted to having committed the crime, saying he usually sold his victims to yet-to-be-ascertained agents.
“We have witnessed many incidences of children being missing in Lapai town without apprehending any of the criminals. However, when the people caught this one, they decided, out of anger, to take the law into their own hands. They killed the suspect on the spot and burned his body.”
According to the source, when the mission of the suspect was resisted, he ran towards the burial ground along the Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS) Lapai.
The mob chased him there, caught and dragged him to the town centre and set him ablaze before the arrival of security operatives dragged him back to the centre of the town and set him ablaze before the arrival of the police.
As at the time of filling this report, the state police command is yet to issue an official statement on the sad development.
