Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has declared William Ruto as the President-elect.
William Ruto of UDA was declared by IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati on Monday 15th August, 2022.
According to IEBC, Ruto beat his rival Raila Odinga after getting 50.49%.
Ruto won Kenya’s presidential race by 7,176,141 votes, according to the electoral commission chair.
However, there was confusion over the announcement of the Kenyan presidential election results as the deputy chairperson of the election commission and three other commissioners disowned the presidential election results before the announcement was made.
“We are not able to take ownership of the results that will be announced,” Juliana Cherera, the deputy chairperson of the electoral commission told a media briefing at a different venue from where the announcement was made.
President Uhuru Kenyatta had backed the arch rival, former prime minister Raila Odinga to win the election against Ruto, who is the vice president.
The situation is tense amid previous calls be prominent Kenyan clerics for the loser to accept the results and prevent a descent into bloody violence that had followed previous elections.
