Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, has revealed the reasons his team lost 3-1 away to West Ham United at the London Stadium in a Carabao Cup match on Wednesday night.
Arteta said Arsenal lost the match to West Ham’s David Moyes tutored side as a result of absent of key players and the team failure to do well by competing for balls in key areas, giving away balls to opponents, not competing for duel, especially in a 50-50 situations during the match.
The former Manchester City assistant manager did not start the likes of William Saliba and Declan Rice against Moyes’ side.
He watched as West Ham outclassed and sent packing his team from the Carabao Cup, following goals from Ben Whites (own-goal) Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Arteta identified the key areas his team need to improve after their unceremonious exit from the competition.
When asked if the absence of Rice and Saliba had a big impact on Arsenal’s lack of physicality, Arteta told reporters at his post-match press conference after the game: “Obviously there are different players that bring something different to the table but it’s not about that, it is about a lot of simple things that we didn’t do well at all today.
“Some of them were competing, some were duels, 50-50s, but we had a lot of giveaways we have in areas that we didn’t allow us in any moment to be a threat in the final third and that’s something we have to improve dramatically from today.”
Arsenal next maych is against high flying Newcastle United in an away English Premier League(EPL) clash this weekend. Newcastle eliminated Manchester United out of Carabao Cup with a 3-0 thrashing at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
