Unknown gunmen on Sunday ambushed the convoy of the Senator representing Anambra South, Chief Ifeanyi Uba at Enugwu-Ukwu in Njikoka local government area of Anambra State.
Some of Senator Uba’s aides including security men were killed in the attack.
The State Police spokesman, Ikenga Tochukwu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, confirmed the incident, but refused to mention the number of causalities, though promised to brief the press later.
Ikenga said: “Yes, there was an attack at Enugwu-Ukwu today, but the casualty figure is not clear. As I speak to you, the CP has personally led a team of men to the scene, and normalcy has been restored”.
Sources said the gunmen double crossed Uba’s convoy and opened fire, leaving many dead and others with varying degrees of injuries.
Mr Uba was said to have escaped the gunfire that the gunmen rained on his convoy.
A viral video clip which captured the bloody scene showed lifeless bodies in pick-up back seat and inside the car itself.
Mr Ubah’s Media Assistant, Mr Kameh Ogbonna confirmed the incident stating that the attack on Ubah’s convoy was an elaborately planned assassination attempt.
According to him, it was a surprise attack, noting that but for the bullet-proof vehicle of the Senator, the assailants may have succeeded in their evil plot.
He said: “If not for the bullet-proof Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV), the Senator was riding in, he would have been dead by now.
“This is a premeditated attempt on the life of the Senator Representing Anambra South Senatorial District, Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah.
“We were passing Enugwu Ukwu junction when they hit us from the front and back, and from all sides. As I speak with you Obum the personal aide to the senator is dead and about seven security operatives were hit by the assassins’ bullets and they may have died,” he said.
